First Radio Controlled cars were invented around sixty years ago in the 1940s but the technology at the time was rough and, although cars could go as fast as 70 mph, it was only possible to have them go round and round in a circle on a tether. By the late 1960s technology had advanced significantly and miniature solid state RC systems became available. This meant that cars could be controlled from a transmitter unit with remotely controlled servo-assisted steering, throttle and brakes. Nowdays Radio Controlled models can be driven on a race track rather than simply in a circle and the precision of control available means that they can be controlled in much the same way as a real vehicle.
